On September 23, our team went to Bondo, Kenya. Last year we conducted the New Man, New Woman, New Life there for about 220 clergy and lay readers. This time we had 30 graduates from the 2012 program for the Master Class. We started out in groups discussing how they have been using the NMNW material.  My group shared how the last year’s teaching had helped their lives. One man shared that for him he had mistreated his wife so much. Before he shared the material with others he began with his wife, and asked for her forgiveness. She shared the book and now they live a very good life. Another one shared with his son and his wife who were at the brink of separating.  After sharing the Bible’s message, their marriage is working very well.  A lady who teaches Sunday School said that the boys refuse to do “girls’” work.  So she started teaching them the intention of God on Creation, and there was no more “girl” / “boy” work. The children work well among themselves.  After these sharing we did master class. NEW MAN, NEW WOMAN, NEW LIFE SEMINARS, Maseno West In this church we divided into 3 big groups of 30 +. Our groups were full of members of the clergy. I was working with Rev. Canon Jovahn Turyamureeba, and we worked well. In the Luo Bible [Luo is the local language in this part of Kenya], the words, “who was with her” (Gen. 3:6) isn’t included, so we really went a lot of discussion. [Note from Carrie: This verse, which indicates that the man was present during the temptation, is important in cultural contexts that hold the woman to be the sole blame for the Fall]. After reading a lot of different translations of Genesis, we agreed that the Luo had omitted words that were in the original. Another comment was about the curses in Genesis 3. One clergy member said God wasn’t being just this time because the man and the woman sinned more than the snake and so deserved the curse. There was another argument about what would happen if people wouldn’t think of sex all the time and would settle on working together.  One clergy member said, “We leave sex alone if we really want people to enjoy these teachings”.  In fact some said these things for the sake of saying them just to have fun, and I tell you we had fun.   When we were on the last day of our teaching the bishop of Maseno came and we were blessed.
