Donell and Carrie Return to Africa After pandemic postponements, leaders eager for training

by Dr. Carrie Miles

We are excited to announce that Donell Peck and Carrie Miles will soon be returning to Africa. We will be met and accompanied by Executive Director for Empower/Africa, Bishop Frank Michael Tweheyo.

Carrie and Frank will start out in Rwanda, where we will meet with several Anglican bishops who are interested in Empower programs. We go from there to Burundi to visit the wonderful people with whom we have been working since 2007 – two of whom are now Anglican bishops. Empower’s last visit there was in January 2015, at which time we met with the archbishop and bishops with plans to take the New Man, New Woman, New Life program throughout the province. However, political instability, and then the pandemic, put those plans on hold.

On September 10, Frank and Carrie will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, where we will be joined by Donell. There, we will conduct the Master Class (advanced training) for the representatives of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa who took the NMNW seminar in 2019. You might remember that this training was originally scheduled for May 2020 but had to be cancelled due to Covid. We, and they, are excited to be able to move forward this year.

We will also conduct a Master Class at St. Paul’s University. Under the direction of Dr. Zablon Bundi Mutongo, new SPILL director Dr. James Njau, and Elizabeth Wanjiku Ndabi, St. Paul’s has become an extraordinary partner for the Empower program, conducting several programs a year.

As Frank found when he was last in Nairobi, there is much interest in the NMNW program in Kenya. We are gathering all of these stakeholders to a “Roundtable” to be held on September 17 at St. Paul’s University. We will discuss how the different groups can work together as we move toward making Empower more indigenous to Africa.

Carrie leaves on August 30, Frank on September 1, and Donell on September 8. Please pray for journey mercies for us all, and that God’s purposes will be accomplished. Please consider financially supporting our efforts as well – travel is outrageously expensive this year. You can give safely and securely here. And look soon for Rev. Dr. Sally Bryant’s report on her very successful trip to Malawi.
